Best Standalone Smart Watches With Sim Cards & Wifi

One of my biggest bugbears when it comes to smartwatches is that you’re often required to have your phone connected to them at all times. It annoys me, especially when I’m wanting to do some exercise and don’t want a cell phone in my pocket – or you might not simply want to take your smartphone with you for whatever reasons.

It’s okay, we understand, which is why we’ve gone through research and finding out what the best standalone smartwatches with SIM cards & wifi are, so you don’t have to have your cell phone on you at all times.

In this post, we go through some of our top choices, and a little bit around some of the features you can come to expect, keep reading to find out more:

Our top standalone smartwatches

We’ve done the research, looked through hundreds of smartwatches, just to save you the leg work. After our research, we’ve managed to pick out some of the most popular options based on reviews, price, description and overall product quality.

We’ve detailed our best 5 options for you below, you can click on any of them to read a more in-depth product description, or alternatively, keep reading for a buying guide.

  1. Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular, 44mm) – Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band
  2. TicWatch Pro 4G LTE Cellular Smartwatch GPS
  3. Fossil Gen 5 Carlyle Stainless Steel Touchscreen Smartwatch with Speaker
  4. BAOSG Bluetooth Smart Watch,Wrist Watch Bracelet with SIM Card Slot

Are these smartwatches truly standalone?

In truth, it’s a mix, some of the watches in this list are truly standalone and can work completely independently from a smartwatch, without ever having to connect with one and having its own SIM slot. The watches that are completely standalone will say in their description and be visible in the pictures that they have a SIM tray.

However, with technology advancements, there are a lot of latest smartwatches which can work with your cell phone, even when they are completely out of range. They support cellular connectivity, so you can receive calls and text even when you’re miles away from your phone.

Do I need a smartwatch with a SIM card?

These devices are actually not that well known, not smartwatches of course, but ones which function without having to have your phone nearby. It is in recent years or even months becoming more and more popular though, with a lot of the latest smartwatches that have been released putting more emphasis on this as a feature.

The reason it’s not a widely adopted technology, at least as yet, is that the batteries in smartwatches are still rather small, and adding in 4G capability drains this quite quick. As the batteries improve, so will this feature.

Do you need one? Well, it will likely never replace your cell phone, because they don’t have all the features, capability and aren’t as easy to use as one, for phoning and texting anyhow. That being said it can be a really useful feature, cell phones, with their large size, can be a bit of a pain to drag around, such as for instance if you’re going for a run or just want to get off the grid, but still want to be contactable or at least have some way of reaching people in an emergency.

So if you’re not a fan of having your phone for dinner, or when you’re on a run, or any other activity for that matter, this could be a good solution for you.

Do they support 4G?

Yes – all of the options we have picked out in our list support 4G LTE, it’s 2020, it wouldn’t be much use if they didn’t! In truth all recent smartwatches that support calling and texting features for the past few years have featured 4G technology.

As far as we are aware, and that we could see with the recent models, there was yet to be anything that featured 5G. It may be exciting to keep an eye out in the future to see future smartwatches with SIM cards if they look to feature 5G soon when it’s more widely rolled out.

What features do standalone smartwatches have?

A true standalone smartwatch will have a SIM card slot, SD card and WiFi capabilities. As we’ve mentioned, however, the tech is getting better in smartwatches and a lot of the main brands have now entered the “standalone” game, which means you get a lot more bang for your money. Some general smartwatch features include:

  • Capability to call & text without your phone nearby
  • Fitness related apps, usually to monitor heart rate, activity and sleep
  • General apps & even games
  • High quality screens & strong glass (sometimes Gorilla)
  • GPS capability
  • A decent battery life, unlike some of the pre-decessors

FAQs

Not answered your question? Sorry about that! We’ve collated some of the most common questions about standalone smartwatches and answered them for you below:

Are smartwatches built to last?
Yes, they are. Smartwatches when they first came around weren’t as reliable as they are now, but the models nowadays are much higher quality, with a lot having stainless steel finishes, quality glass and batteries that will last the test of time.

How are the user interfaces on them?
It varies completely. Each smartwatch will have its own operating system, if we had to pick a favourite, well we couldn’t, it would be iOS or Google’s systems.

How is the battery life on smartwatches?
A lot better than it once was, at the very least you typically see that the batteries will last a day or more, even with quite a lot of usage. There are some models that will last 3+ days, which was unheard of in the early days of smartwatches.

How much should I spend on a smartwatch?
It really depends on you. If you’ve never had one, we wouldn’t suggest jumping in at the more expensive Apple, Samsung & TicWatch products, instead go for a cheaper model around the $20-40 mark, just to figure out if you actually like wearing it and if you feel like it’s for you. The cheaper models usually lack a bit of quality feel and the software isn’t as great, but if you’re happy with the general concept then you can decide on upgrading to a more expensive one.

Recommended Best MMORPG & MMO Games For PvE

We love a good MMO / MMORPG and collectively we’ve lost far too many hours over the years to them! A big part of just about every MMO(RPG) and often the main focus is the PvP or Player vs Player, but that’s not the only reason people play these games. Whether it’s grinding to save for Manastones on Aion or redoing a dungeon over and over on World of Warcraft to get that item drop you want, PvE or Player vs Environment is also a massive part of it for a lot of players.

There are so many brilliant PvE based MMO & MMORPGs to choose from, so it’s going to be quite hard to narrow down the list, but we’ve done it for you! In this article, we’ll dig into which are the top PvE MMO & MMORPGs giving you a brief description about each, why it’s good for a PvE lover, who it’s developed by, what platform it’s on, what the PvE elements of each game are and whether it’s a paid for model (no one likes a pay to win!).

What Is An MMO / MMORPG?

So, let’s start with the absolute basics, what exactly is an MMO? Well, simply put, it’s a massive multiplayer online game which covers obviously a wide range of different games. It’s in essence where a large number of people are able to play a game together, online, whether that be a few players or millions.

MMORPG is a type of MMO, and the extra RPG bit stands for Role Playing Game. The difference between the two is that all MMORPG’s are based on MMO’s but not all MMO’s are RPGs.

An MMO can be anything, such as an online strategy game, a popular example of this would be Starcraft, which isn’t a game in which you play a role or character. RPGs are often also based in fantasy realms, but that’s not always true, it’s anything by definition in which you play a role.

What does PvE mean?

PvE stands for player versus environment, which is often in the form of monsters, goblins or fantasy creatures, depending on the game. It’s a term used in single-player games as well as MMO (MMORPGs) as well as several other game modes.

In contrast to the other more popular term is PvP, player versus player, it is actually player versus computer-controlled enemies. The PvE in some games may contain a storyline or narrative and even contain missions or quests.

Finding a good PvE focused MMO

It’s actually pretty tricky to find a good PvE MMORPG believe it or not, which sounds ridiculous in itself, but it’s because most MMORPG games focus on the PvP aspect of the game which isn’t always what everyone favors and many of which can neglect to develop a challenging and fun PvE environment for the players that favor that side of the game.

It’s not true of all MMORPG’s though, there are still some great PvE MMORPG’s out there that you can play that will still present a great and exciting challenge, without having to get involved in any PvP or at least minimizing it, which is why we’re here to help you pick out the best one!

Our top PvE MMO & MMORPG Picks

As we’ve mentioned, we’ve played many hours of every one of these games on the list, perhaps too many hours. That being said, we’ve collated a list of what we consider to be the best MMORPGs for PvE enthusiasts, giving a brief description and an explanation as to why.

Aion

Aion is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game that has a combination of PvP and PvE elements. It’s a game in a fantasy environment in which you play a character that has a class, such as cleric or sorcerer as an example, and you perform skill moves in combinations to kill the environment enemies or other players depending on which side you choose Elysea or Asmodae.

The game has a lot of option when it comes to PvE including raids and grinding for PvE specialist gear as well as levelling of course. The only downside if you are planning to play the game from a purely PvE perspective is that in the open world you can be ganked by the other side of what you choose (Elysea or Asmodae) at any given time when rifts open up.

Game Information

  • Developer: NCSoft
  • Platform: PC
  • PvE Elements: Quests, Dungeons, Flying PvE, Raids, Bosses, Levelling
  • Model: Free to Play – Can pay for upgrades

Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy is a massive game, but you might not be aware that they have in fact dipped their toe into the world of MMORPGs with the XIV game. It was released in 2013 on Windows PCs and PS3 and it now also supports MacOS and PS4, it was rumoured over the past few years that it was going to be released on Xbox One, but with new generation consoles shortly coming out, we’re doubtful this will ever happen.

It’s a game based in the fictional land of Eorzea and follows on from the original game, featured in a time where the land needs to recover and rebuild which the players must work on whilst having the threat of being invaded by the Garlean Empire. The original version of the game, in 2010 was a significant failure for the enterprise, but this 2.0 edition was much better received.

Since it’s release it has also had three major expansion packs which include Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbriners, the latter being as recent as 2019. The game is featured in a world where players can interact with their characters in the environment. There’s a large running story to play, so you won’t get bored, and it also features several side quests and dungeons to keep PvE lovers busy.

Game Information

  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Platform: PC & PS4
  • PvE Elements: Quests, Raids, Bosses, Long story mode
  • Model: Subscription format

Word of Warcraft

Now, surely you’ve heard of World of Warcraft right? or WoW as it’s affectionately referred too and yes, it’s still going strong! If you’ve not heard of it, it’s a massive MMORPG that was first released in 2004 by a company called Blizzard Entertainment. It takes place in Azeroth, a fantasy world, it also features several expansion packs which have been released over the years including The Burning Crusade, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, Warlords of Draenor and Lich King.

It was one of the worlds most popular MMORPGs and still is one of the top ones to this day. You control a character in the game and can explore the landscape as well as fight several monsters, quest and interact with NPCs, meaning it has a lot of options for those who are interested in PvE.

Each server, or realm, falls into Normal which is a standard type of world that offers PvE and PvP or RP which is more focused on roleplaying in character. This has since however been replaced, by something called “War Mode” which allows people who don’t want to have the PvP elements of the game to essentially turn it off – which is something you can do in two of the capital cities within the game. Realms are also categorised by language, so you can play with people who speak your own language.

Game Information

  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Platform: PC
  • PvE Elements: Quests, Dungeons, Bosses and monster hunting
  • Model: Free up until level 20, then you need a subscription

Guild Wars 2

This is another well-known MMORPG developed by NCSoft and ArenaNet, Guild Wars 2. It’s again set in a fantasy world named Tyria and it follows something called Destiny’s Edge, it has a consistent story mode throughout the game which allows you to progress through the various environments that are available.

It allows players to approach questing in a slightly different way to most MMORPGs as it follows through a story which responds to the player’s actions, which isn’t particularly common for games of this kind.

The game is a favorite amongst PvE lovers as it revolves mostly around the story, which is that your player is tasked with reuniting the disbanded Destiny Edge members to combine all the player races and combat Zhaitan who is the undead Elder Dragon, or at least that completes the first step of the game!

Game Information

  • Developer: ArenaNet
  • Platform: PC
  • PvE Elements: Significant story, monster hunting, questing (with a twist), raiding and bosses
  • Model: Free to Play

Runescape (Old School)

There are two versions of the Runescape game, the standard one and the Old School one, and personally, we favor the Old School which is why this one has made the list, despite being older graphically, it has a better and cult following in our personal opinion, which makes it a bit more challenging.

It’s a fantasy MMORPG that is developed by a company called Jagex, it was first released in 2001 and is now on its third iteration of the game with the classic version having been shut down in 2018, the old school version actually being version two and the latest being considered as Runescape 3, by some. It’s had over 200 million accounts created and is the largest free MMORPG.

It takes place in a medieval fantasy realm that is divided into different kingdoms in which you can travel between different regions, finding all sorts of monsters, starting and finishing quests, playing Mini-Games, creating your own house and so much more.

The PvE of this game is fantastic, and if you don’t want to, you can completely stay away from the PvE elements as many within the game do as they try to achieve the highest levels and experience in the game.

Game Information

  • Developer: Jagex
  • Platform: PC & Mobile
  • PvE Elements: Quests, Mini Games (Pest Control, etc), PvE specific skills, Levelling
  • Model: Free To Play (Can pay monthly for members zones & expanded areas)

Tera

TERA actually stands for the Exilred Realm of Arborea and is a MMORPG, sometimes also referred too as TERA Online. It was developed by Blue Hole and was originally released in 2011.

The idea is that there are two beings, titans, called Arun and Shara and as they slept they began manifesting the Exiled Realm of Arborea and their bodies began to form the two continents. As you may have guessed, it’s a fantasy world where these titans dreams came to life.

The game itself is a typical MMORPG with features like crafting, questions, NPC battling and as most do, it features Player versus Player elements. It has a good combat system with several dungeons to get dug into and you can play on a PvE server meaning you can avoid PvP conflict but there are generally fewer people that play the PvE servers.

Game Information

  • Developer: Bluehole Studio
  • Platform: PC, Xbox One, PS4
  • PvE Elements: Questing, Dungeons, Bosses & Levelling vs NPCs
  • Model: Free to Play

The Elder Scrolls

This MMORPG is brought to you by Bethesda Softworks and is focused on being a true open-world game with free-form gameplay and is part of a series that includes Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim which are all award-winning games.

It’s part of a fictional universe combining real-world elements like the roman empire with pre-medieval elements and widespread magic use and mythological creatures, all within the same game. The general theme of the game is that there is an incoming threat, for your chosen hero to defeat, essentially.

Set in Tamriel it features gameplay that is full of questing, random scenarios for you to take on and a lot of free roam exploring. It’s a great game with plenty to do from both a PvE and PVP perspective, you can even do several different PvE based builds and mainly focus on that within the game, there’s no need to get involved in the PvP if you don’t want too and the game will still be challenging enough to keep you interested for a long time.

Game Information

  • Developer: ZeniMax Online Studios
  • Platform: PC
  • PvE Elements: Questing, Trails, Instances, Bosses & Arenas
  • Model: Pay to Play

Best Graphics Cards For VR

Virtual reality or VR is no longer the future, it’s here, and there are loads of VR headsets on the market that you can get your hand on and nowadays, even at affordable prices.

It’s making VR a more commonly used platform by the day, but the problem that you might find, at least if you’re a PC gamer, is that you need a pretty decent graphics card in order to have it run without any issues.

Better hardware, better experience. Keeping reading our buying guide & top product choices to find out more.

  1. What is VR & how does it work?
  2. Why does VR need a high-quality graphics card?
  3. What graphics card is recommended for VR?
  4. Finding a VR ready GPU
  5. Beware of VR sickness
  6. Best budget graphics card for VR
  7. Best mid-range graphics card for VR
  8. Best high-spec graphics card for VR
  9. Best overall graphics card for VR

What is VR & how does it work?

Virtual reality (VR) is exactly what it says on the tin, using unique displays and cutting edge tech to create an experience that you can really immerse yourself in, through a combination of all of your senses.

The VR application will feel like it surrounds you, putting the headset on should combine sight, sound, touch to the point that you feel like you are fully immersed within the gameplay itself.

As it develops there are several games new and old that are being made for the sole purpose of VR, one of the biggest breakthroughs was the redesign of Skyrim, a very popular video game, which was configured to work on PC and run through VR. If you’ve ever played Skyrim, you might realise why this is one of the best choices to showcase VRs initial capabilities.

VR links the game to your actions, you duck when the dragon breathes fire, and your character will do the same, you swing your sword, your character will do the same.

It’s not just games though, you can get movies, TV shows and more that are specifically designed for VR and to make it feel like you are actually in the film itself with a 360 view.

The possibilities are pretty endless, but how does it actually work? The headset will use either two LCD displays or two feeds sent to a single LCD display (one per each eye). These are connected by lenses between your two eyes so that no gaps can be seen.

These lenses will create a stereoscopic 3d image by reshaping the picture for each eye as each eye acts differently. To really see the genius technology required in a VR headset, close one of your eyes when you have it on and you’ll see what we mean.

Why does VR need a high-quality graphics card?

You might be wondering why we’ve even written this post, why do you need to consider your graphics card options when it comes to building your VR PC? Well VR, as you might imagine, can be quite graphically demanding, so it’s important that you put a graphics card that can cope with that and not let down the rest of the PC.

It’s recommended that you have a minimum of a NVIDIA GTX 970 which as an example is retailing at $250-260 on Amazon currently (example) or a AMD R9 390. These are quite obviously dated cards in 2020, so you can often find a lot more powerful and cheaper options on the market, which we’ll explore later.

It’s also worth mentioning that you need to have a decent quality CPU as well, which is recommended to be an i5-4590 at the very minimum.

What graphics card is recommended for VR?

As with anything tech-based, graphics card are forever changing so I wouldn’t want to say definitely which is the best graphics card for VR at the given time you’re looking, however, there’s a good way of finding out the best deal.

The NVIDIA GTX 970 which I mentioned above as the minimum graphics requirement for VR is benchmarked by PassMark Software at 622,940, so anything higher than this that is VR ready should do.

The best thing to do for research purposes is to go somewhere like Amazon.com and search for VR ready graphics cards, which will provide you with several suitable graphics cards which you can then check the benchmark stats for.

As an example, for under $200 is the current best seller, XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX, which benchmarks at 502,646.

Finding a VR ready GPU

It’s relatively easy to find a VR compatible graphics card nowadays since the technology has been readily available for a few years now. That means that you can always find a competitive deal, and even some of the budget options are more than capable of running VR.

We’ll go through our research & and pick out some of the best graphics cards for VR for you later in the article.

Beware of VR sickness

This is another thing to be wary of when using VR. Although it’s been around for a long time, it’s really become a staple of the gamers home in recent years with several new & competitively priced products coming to the market.

It’s enjoyable, but some of the early versions of the software put a lot of people off, as the term “VR Sickness” became very prominent. It’s not so common now, but with cheaper versions of headsets or older generations, you might feel a bit of nausea whilst playing.

How does this relate to graphics card you might ask? Well, a lot of people seem to have the impression that if they experience VR sickness that it might be because of their graphics card and the quality of it. You don’t just have to jump into buying a new GPU though, because it’s not the issue, it’s more likely your headset or even a poorly developed VR game.

Best budget graphics card for VR

If you’re looking at graphics cards for VR but don’t have the budget to go for something a little bit more on the expensive side, not to worry, as we’ve mentioned there are several GPU’s out there at very reasonable prices that will do the job. Here are just a few of the best:

Remember when you thought smartwatches were the coolest new thing on the market? I know I do, but it’s been a few years since then, and smartwatch technology has moved on. Amongst a whole host of new features and updates to the latest set of smartwatches is some with the functionality of an embedded camera.

These cameras typically speaking are visible at the bottom or top of the smartwatch, but vary product from to product. If you’re an avid smartwatch wearer and always on the go with a need for a picture here and there, then this might be a good option for you as it allows you to quickly snap pictures from your wrist.

In this article, we’ll dig into everything you need to know about smartwatches with cameras and pick out some of our favourite products based on their descriptions, functionality, reviews & of course pricing.

It’s a long guide, so use the links below to navigate to the section you’re most interested in:

Our top smartwatch with a camera choice

We’ve spent endless hours trawling the internet, reading hundreds of product descriptions, scrolling through countless reviews & looking in detail at all the functionality of some of these smartwatches with cameras, just to find you the best buy.

In our rather humble opinion, out of all the research we’ve done we think the best watch to make our list is the:

Android Smartwatch Touch Screen Bluetooth Smart Watch for Android Phones Wrist Phone Watch with SIM Card Slot & Camera, Waterproof Sports Fitness Tracker Watch for Men Women Kids

Although we like to think all 5 watches we have highlighted later in this article are great buys, there is a range of prices and they are suitable for a variety of different people.

Why buy a smartwatch with a camera?

Because who doesn’t want the latest tech of course! Yeah, you’re right, that’s not a proper reason. Although it’s a bit of a luxury item there are actually several functional reasons you should invest in a smartwatch with a camera and some of which you might not have even considered. We’ve put together a bit of a shortlist for you to look over and to help aid your decision on why buying a smartwatch with a video camera is, in fact, a good purchase:

  • Quick photos on the go: Sometimes you don’t have your phone on you, or maybe you’re a little bit lazy and just don’t want to take it out your pocket. Whatever your reason is, not to worry, just a quick click on your smartwatch to activate the camera and off you go! It’s a convenient option for those who lead a busy life & value every second.
  • Harder to lose than your phone: It’s on your wrist, compared to your smartphone which is likely in your pocket, it’s much harder to lose something attached to your arm.
  • Better than your standard smartwatch: Well this one is obvious, so you’ve got a smartwatch, but what is it lacking? A camera of course!
  • Multiple other functions: As with any smartwatch, there are multiple other functions and apps that are often included, which makes them far better than it’s quartz counterpart.

All in there relatively inexpensive, and to have a camera on your smartwatch won’t set you back an awful lot in comparison to a standard smartwatch, you may, in fact, be surprised.

How do you use the camera on a smartwatch?

It’s relatively straight forward, and much like if you were going to be using your smartphone to take the photos. There will be an app that you can access on the watch for the camera, in which you can launch. The camera is typically facing towards you on top of the watch, perfect for selfies!

Some of the cameras you have to click in order to take a photo, but others will have a button in which you can use.

Can the cameras record videos, or just take pictures?

You might be wondering whether the camera that is attached to the smartwatches can do more than simply take photos, there’s no particularly straight answer as it varies between product to product. From what we’ve seen throughout our in-depth research is that most products will take pictures as well as record videos, although these are typically limited to “small” videos, which will be due to the limited memory in these devices.

Advantages & Disadvantages of a smartwatch with a camera

Just like with anything there are both advantages and disadvantages to having a smartwatch with a camera. We’ve summarised some of the positive and negative features of this new technology for you below:

Advantages:

  • It’s easy to access notifications quickly, and you’re less likely to miss them as your wrist is buzzing. It’ll reduce the number of times you need to take your cell phone out your pocket for those pointless notifications!
  • You can answer a phone call from your wrist, you’re less likely to miss it, again because your wrist will be buzzing.
  • Take quick pictures – It’s much faster to take a picture from your wrist than take your phone out, unlock it and open the camera
  • You can of course often record videos
  • A lot of smartwatches also have some great apps that can help you track your fitness, including weight, nutrition, exercise, amongst several other things.
  • You can often add additional apps like calculators, alarms, music and games.

Disadvantages:

  • The watch does have a small screen, so you need to work with less area when it comes to clicking the apps, although that isn’t too tricky to get used too.
  • It can’t fully replace your smartphone.
  • It’s another thing that you have to charge when you go to bed.
  • Generally the cameras are only good for quick pictures and videos, the quality won’t be as clear as your smartphone.

How to connect the camera smartwatch with your phone

If you’ve never had or used a smartwatch you may not know that it connects to your cell phone directly, so it can cross-reference information such as texts, phone contacts & calling out.

If you’ve bought yourself a smartwatch, you might be struggling to figure out how to connect it to your smartphone. Don’t panic, the process is very easy and straight forward and you don’t need to be a tech wizz in order to do it.

  1. Read the manual firstly, it may require you to download a specific app
  2. Search for the device in the app or using bluetooth
  3. Click on the device and pair, you will be given a code that should appear on both devices, type in the code in the relevant device & confirm
  4. The device should pair and provide you with a confirmation message
  5. You might have to enable notifications, this should pop up, but if not you can do this in your phone settings
  6. You might also be prompted to share your contact & other information with the smartwatch, which you should allow
  7. Success!

How do you delete smartwatch camera photos?

We’ve touched on the fact that smartwatches typically don’t have a large amount of memory, which can mean if you are taking lots of photos you need to free up some memory from time to time in order to take more.

It’s an easy and straight forward process to go through your photos and delete them. You can often do it from the watch screen by simply visiting the gallery, pressing and holding on the photos until the option to select & delete appears.

Depending on the smartwatch you have bought, the photos might also be stored within your phone automatically, and you might be able to delete them on your smartwatch, by using the app you have used to pair it with your phone.

Quick Answer: Most of the functionality will not work without WiFi as Alexa requires communication with the cloud, however, you can use it through a hotspot and the speaker and alarm functions may still work.

You’ve heard of Amazon’s product Alexa right? If so, you’ll know that it is used via WiFi – either being voice-controlled or using an app on your Android or iOS device. You might be visiting a place without WiFi, or simply not have WiFi in your home & you’re wondering whether the Alexa can be used, or is worth buying.

In this article, we’ll answer all the questions you may have about Alexa and it’s functionality without WiFi, as well as ways you might be able to get around it. You can use the quick navigation below to go to the section that best answers your question:

Right, now let’s dig into the article:

What is an Amazon Alexa?

Let’s start with the basics, maybe you haven’t heard of the Amazon Alexa & you’re doing your research as to whether it’s worthwhile buying one.

Alexa itself is simply put an Artificial Intelligence service powered and developed by Amazon, using their own cloud service. It came to the market in 2014 and was introduced with the original Echo smart speaker and they are now a household name in over 40 countries across the globe with millions of devices & several generations to date.

As well as Alexa being mostly used in Echo devices, they are also available on third-party devices. A lot of people get confused between Alexa itself and the Echo, they are two different things, Alexa is the AI behind it, the Echo is just the device that has the AI software.

Alexa is mostly controlled through voice commands allowing you to play music by simply asking “Alexa, play [song] on [music service], or you can ask for things like the weather and can even order a takeaway, as well as many more, they’re constantly adding additional services.

As you would expect, however, the Alexa artificial intelligence needs to constantly communicate with Amazon’s cloud infrastructure, so will that work without WiFi?

Will my Amazon Alexa work without WiFi?

Now the question you’ve been waiting for, the simple answer is no, you’re Alexa will not work without WiFi, at least not properly. As mentioned previously, Alexa or the Echo needs to constantly be in communication with Amazon infrastructure, nothing is actually stored on the device itself.

Don’t fear, however, hope is not lost. If you have an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot, you might still be able to get some functionality out of it despite not having an actual WiFi connection, it’s not just an expensive hockey puck or paperweight so not to worry.

What features will work without WiFi?

As Alexa needs constant communication to the Amazon servers, the truth is that very little of the features it offers will work. If however you have an Echo or Echo dot then you may still be able to use the speaker’s functionality. Alternatively, to make all the features work you can use a hotspot. You will also find that the Alarms function of Alexa will still work without having any WiFi connection.

We’ll dig into how to do these things in the next sections.

Can Alexa connect to a hotspot?

If you find yourself without WiFi but have a decent phone connection with some broadband you can in fact set your Alexa up to use your phones internet. It’s relatively easy to set up as well, here are the steps:

  1. Open the Alexa app you should have downloaded on your phone or device
  2. Select the option, devices
  3. Choose the Echo & Alexa option
  4. Choose your device
  5. Make sure you have your hotspot on and know the name of the WiFi & password
  6. Select change next to the WiFi network, find the name of your hotspot and connect
  7. Your Alexa device should be connected to WiFi via your hotspot

Concerned about how much of your data it might use to run an Alexa through your hotspot? Well, unfortunately, it’s really hard to say, because it depends on what you’re doing. Having an Alexa idle and connected to your phone uses roughly 1mpbs, it’s thought that the worst-case scenario, is using Alexa to stream music which can max out at around 100mb per hour.

Does Alexa have Bluetooth & can I just use it as a speaker without WiFi?

Actually, surprisingly, with all the limited functions, yes, or at least kind of anyway. The Echo or Echo Dot can be used via Bluetooth as a speaker without having to connect to WiFi, but the proviso is that it needs to be set up when you’ve previously had a WiFi connection.

What I mean by that is, in the past if you have set up the Bluetooth function when you’ve had WiFi, then the speaker will still work. Here are the steps if you’re not quite sure how you can do this (again you’ll need WiFi to actually set this part up):

  1. On your smartphone open the Alexa app and go to your settings
  2. Choose the device to pair
  3. Select Bluetooth and then a device from the list
  4. “Forget” for everything other than the device you intend to use from this list
  5. You should now be able to use the speaker through Bluetooth

Conclusion

Ultimately, in conclusion, Alexa is a great AI, and when you get into the habit of using it can save you a lot of time and the Echo’s are fantastic devices, but that being said if you don’t have WiFi or feel like you might be going a considerable amount of time without it, then Amazon’s Alexa product might not be for you. If you’re intending on using it as a speaker without WiFi, there are likely better speakers on the market for the same price point, if of course that’s it’s the only purpose.

Bejeweled vs Bejeweled Blitz: What’s The Difference?

When was the last time your favorite video game got a facelift?

If your favorite game is Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, the facelift came out recently offering blitz fans, even more, to get all worked up about.

The same trick and tips from original Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook are a good start to getting a top score, but that’s just the beginning. Some of the new features of Bejeweled Blitz blow away the competition and the original.

Just like before, speed is one of the key components of getting a high score in Bejeweled Blitz, but making combinations that include four or five gens just got even more important.

One of the nice improvements of the Bejeweled Blitz over the original is the ability to get special gems when you combine five gems with three horizontal and three vertical. The combination, sometimes shaped like a cross yields an all-new special gem – the star gem. Once you create the star gem, match it with two others of its base color and unleash its power.

Once the star gem is activated, it destroys all the gems in its row and in its column, substantially adding to your points and remaking the look of the board.

Connecting five gems of the same type in a vertical or horizontal line still results in a hypercube, but the hypercube just cooler too. In addition to a new graphic which looks something like a rotating die, the game makers also added a special feature when you exchange two hypercubes. Exchanging two cubes explodes every gem on the board, resulting in a huge jump to your score.

Another nice addition of the new version of Bejeweled Blitz is the “Last Hurrah” at the end of the game. Fans of Bejeweled Blitz will remember that you have just one minute to outscore your friends and enemies on Facebook. In the original game, nothing was more frustrating than leaving behind all those nifty special gems that you just hadn’t used yet.

Now, during the last hurrah, speciality gems including multiplier gems explode adding a bit more to your final total.

Speed is still the most important factor in the game, though, with a base speed bonus of 1250 points available with every exchange. Get the multiplier gems going and the speed bonuses are multiplied too.

The other way that speed is a factor in the game is the speed of your download ability. Players on dialup may find that the gems refresh slower and therefore make it harder to get the really great top scores.

Why buy your child an MP3 player?

You might be on the fence as to whether you should be buying your child an MP3, but we can assure you that it’s a positive thing. Kids and music go together, like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong, see what we did there?

There are several benefits to buying your child an MP3 player, and here are just a few of them:

  • Lowers stress levels: You might be thinking, my toddler can’t be stressed, there only young! But that isn’t necessarily true, and although kids can’t describe it, they do suffer from stress. You may know from listening to yourself that music can affect your mood and is a good de-stressor, and the same is true when it comes to your toddler.
  • Promotes happiness: Listening to music can actually make you release happier hormones. You want a happy toddler right?
  • Settling down & improved sleeping: Some soothing music can also help your child relax & even ease them off to sleep, why do you think you sing to them when they’re going to sleep?
  • Educational music: You can actually find a lot of educational-based music which can teach them as they listen.
  • Promotes interest in singing & instruments: Another thing that regularly listening to music does is promote an interest in either picking up an instrument or singing, a hobby essentially.

What to look for in a child-friendly MP3 player

Convinced that buying one is a good idea? Right, let’s move on then. When you’re in the market to choose an MP3 player for your toddler, there are a couple of things that you should look out for. Here are the features to care about:

  • Functionality: It needs to be easy to use and operate, a lot of the MP3 players for toddlers and younger children have larger buttons, making them easier to operate.
  • Durable design: Obviously kids can be pretty heavy-handed, and will often throw things about, especially if they get a bit over-excited, it’s just their nature. That in mind, you’ll need to make sure the product is able to withstand a fair amount of wear and tear, the best way to do this is by reading reviews.
  • Budget: This kind of goes without saying right? But you obviously want to not spend too much.
  • Quality: So, I don’t think you’re toddler will be that bothered about the highest of quality, they don’t know the difference between a Bose and Sennheiser sound for instance, but you want to ensure it’s not really tiny.

Tips for safe listening

Another thing to consider when letting your children use an MP3 player is to keep it safe. What we mean by that essentially is make sure that they’re not listening to it too loud, as this could damage their eardrums and lead to all sorts of problems, damage occurs in children’s hearing at much lower levels than that of an adult so you need to be careful.

You should also limit the time they listen to it, constant listening to music even at what you consider a safe volume level could still damage their ears.
